Outstanding pastries & cakes. Outstanding!

Deerfield's cakes are very beautiful but, dry. Their donuts, sweet rolls, breads, etc. are very good.

Great Bakery. I love going here.I send my husband to the post office, because if go to the post office I will HAVE to stop at Deerfield ( it is just across the post office). The crossaints are awesome, the BEST I have to say. UPDATE: The Hot cross buns during Easter are awesome!! You have to try them!!
(4)Marc B.
Well this sure is about the largest and most fancy bakery I've ever seen. It's like a restaurant for bakery goods. Walk inside and you'll see an impressive selection of items -- beautiful cakes, fresh doughnuts, hot cross buns, coffee cakes, cookies and more. We ordered a King Cake for Mardi Gras -- so gorgeously dusted in gold, green an purple sugar you'll think you're in the French Quarter.

I've gotten my birthday cakes here for my whole life. It's kind of tradition. But, a damn good one.

Recently I ordered my first party cake from this place. I uploaded a picture through the bakery's website and got an email acknowledging the same and with instructions on how to go about placing the order. The customer service was customer-friendly and very professional. I ended up ordering a double layered (1layer yellow and 1layer chocolate with fresh strawberry fillings) cake with whipped cream topping. I must say that the quality was really great. People loved it. Definitely a 5 star place for cakes and pastries.

We ordered the same cake twice-long story about why we did it-but we did. It was a cake of Wrigley Field. The first time we ordered it, it was perfect-there were all three bases, plus home plate and the pitcher's mound...the SECOND time, however, second base was missing. Not exactly sure how they missed that one, but it was the jokes at the party was "Who stole second base?" We thought it was pretty funny. This tiny mistake isn't enough for me to give them 4 stars because the cake was phenomenal! Everyone raved about it and several people asked where it came from so they could order their next cake from there. Two thumbs up!

Deerfields makes delicious cakes - and when you're buying a birthday cake, taste is all that matters. I list the minor drawbacks first, because they are easily outweighed by the positives. DRAWBACKS Your cake options are somewhat limited, meaning you cannot pick and choose any style cake/frosting combination. You are limited to certain combinations. Cake style and decoration aren't all that great. We've ordered two cakes now, the latest just last weekend. The top of the cake was a gorgeous design, but when you looked at the cake from the side, the cake looked crooked! It was just a matter of icing that was applied somewhat off-line. It doesn't affect the taste, but it did look like the cake was leaning one way. POSITIVES: We've gotten two cakes with fresh strawberries and custard as the fillings, with whipped cream frosting. The fillings do a perfect job of accenting the cake - which is very moist and just right. We opt for the whipped frosting because it is lighter. A bite of this cake feels like a bite of a cloud. Highly recommended.

Beautiful pastries but, disappointing when there are big black flies and fruit flies flying around and resting on the donuts and coffee cakes etc..front and center! Maybe they should enclose these goodies to keep flies out! Gross!!

Absolutly amazing place. I'm literally addicted to this bakery! I buy their sugar cookies, coffee cakes, donuts, and brownies 5 days per week. I can't get enough of this place! I've even been late to appointments because I need my Deerfield's fix! I'm obsessed!

Decided to stop by for lunch. The pluses: free Wi-Fi, good coffee, comes with 3 choices from mild to bold; attentionate staff that makes you feel welcome and will check on you although this is not set up as a sit in place. The minuses: well I ordered a sandwich that came with a choice of chips (regular, baked, or BBQ) and 2 small cookies and it bugs me that panera bread actually provides better quality sandwiches, cookies and heathier sides. The quality of food was not there: soagy bread, banal cookies. I usually make a point to patronize local businesses, unfortunately Deerfields Bakery won't be on my favorite lunch spot list. Maybe a better choice would be to stop by for coffee and dessert only. Will have to try that next time.

Had multiple mini cupcakes that my friend brought for a birthday. AWESOME! Although she didn't buy any "interesting and fancy" cupcakes (like a tres leches or a bananas foster at other bakeries), the traditional flavors were SOOO GOOOOOOOOOD! The cream cheese frosting was whipped to a light consistency that paired so well with the fluffy cupcake underneath it. We tried two different cupcake batters: chocolate and vanilla, with four different frostings: cream cheese, fudge, chocolate, vanilla. As you can see, I ate alot of cupcakes and I normally won't eat this many unless they are COMPLETELY WORTH IT!
(5)Amy S.
The coffee is good, and I love that they have the syrups out so that you customize your drink. Bakery items are hit or miss. Anything with a frosting tends to be oversweet for my taste, but those who love a sugar buzz would probably love them.
(4)Kathy F.
Your almond croissants are why I cannot lose weight. But I love you. And your Deer Joe coffee products.
(5)Boones K.
I got a sampling of their individual cake pieces to try and found all of them to be kind of boring. They were sweat but bland. Their pastries are OK, and I would probably stop here again to pick some up in a pinch.
(2)Oleg K.
If you are trying to lose weight, this place should be avoided at all cost! It has stuff that is so fattening and delicious, that even looking at it will make you gain a few lbs. However, if you need any(and I mean any - type, color, and/or size) b-day cake and have about 24 hrs, this is the place to for you...

Whipped cream............................the only way to go. Don Roth's uses them for birthday cakes. Really the best bakery in the suburbs. 3/11/08 UPDATE Why do I not read other reviews? Shit! I had no idea they served breakfast and lunch! And their coffee is very good too. No, you can't get your specialty coffee drinks, just REAL COFFEE, they way it was meant to be...ok, you can get a shot of flavored syrup too. And it's WAY cheaper than going to Starschmucks which is just a hop, skip and a jump away. Of course, you have a great selection of treats! Cakes, cookies, pastries, bagels, breads....mmmmm!

We have not been to this location (only the original) - and for us too, it's a long haul to get there - but the trip is definitely worth the trek. I'm a pretty good cook - in fact (in)famous people have paid me to cater their parties - but no one can hold a candle to these master bakers. Now that we're only a year shy of our Crystal Anniversary - I'm STILL kicking myself for not hiring them to do our Wedding Cake! They are seriously THAT good and I only wish I had a penny for every glorious goodie they've sold!
(5)Amara H.
This is hands down one of the best bakeries in the Chicago suburbs. There are a variety of factors that make this bakery one of the best - the seasoned history, the pastry selection, and the friendly staff. The ingredients are of quality, and this is clearly reflected in the end product. More often than not, bakeries achieve their popularity from that one pastry they make better than other shops. That being said, the quality of their other pastries are average at best. This is fortunately not the case at Deerfields Bakery. Their doughnuts and coffee cakes/kringles are my go-to. It is a easy place to frequent with a large group of friends because everyone is bound to find something he/she loves. Impressively, for such a local shop, it is open seven days a week. This is hard to come by, particularly in the suburbs. Given this perk, I am able to constantly take a pastry as a gift for friends for various occasions.
(5)Benjamin L.
love your bakery and love that I don't have to travel far to get my morning donuts as I can enjoy them all at christies in palatine. When i get out to BG location I enjoy the smoothies. Wondering if you will ever put your cakes in the palatine location? I know I would buy them. Customer service is top notch. A+
(5)Jess H.
I come here for the Almond strip coffee cake and sugar cookies very often. I havent written a review until I tried other things they have to offer. Donuts are good. But I am not a donut person or care about the flavors. I just tried different mini pastries and they didnt stand out for me like the sugar cookies or the almond strip danish. I tried a bear claw for the first time and it was good. But not my thing to be fair to Deerfields. I am only comparing their almond coffee cake and sugar cookie versus other bakeries and Deerfields is number one favorite for both. I understand what people say about the employees being standoffish, some are friendly, others not so much. It does not deter me as I rather be left alone just looking around and whenever I am ready I just give them the eye contact and theyre usually there to help.

As luck would have it a couple days ago I checked out Deerfield's website interested to try their doughnuts as I have never had their doughnuts before and saw today is National Doughnut Day! 50 cent doughnuts, limit 12, and quantities limited. This was the perfect time to try out their doughnuts and I arrived as soon as they opened. I picked a whole bunch of varieties chocolate sprinkles, Apple, powdered, double chocolate, and glazed. On my way to check out I was drooling over the pineapple upside down cake and the cake I grew up ALWAYS getting here their chocolate chip coffee cake.....YUM! I had to stay focused on what I was there for which was the doughnuts, but gosh darn it I was distracted again by seeing a smoothie board while standing in line to check out. Red velvet and tiramisu smoothies?! They use real cake pieces in these!!! Get out of here! Seriously?! Back to the doughnuts....I arrived back at home and had one.....these doughnuts ROCK!!! Top quality, great tasting chocolate frosting and so fresh! I have a usual go to 5 star doughnut joint and I hate to say it but Deerfield's surpassed them! Who would've thought?! I can totally see myself coming back here again this summer and enjoying their outdoor patio area. I would love to bring the dog with and will call to find out if this is an option. If it is I'll be sure to write it as a tip for all the dog lovers out there. Next time I'll be getting one of those smoothies too!

Try calling them to ask a question and you're on hold for 5 minutes or more. And sometimes they don't even pick up the phone. Terrible, terrible phone manners.
(2)Liz T.
This is a fancy, upscale bakery that I don't quite get the draw. It looks great inside, but I've been here multiple times and don't think it's worth the price tag. Sure, if you have family in town and want to impress them with a beautiful bakery, this is the place. However, the food was nothing special and very expensive. I'm a bit of a coffee snob and thought that the coffee was watered down and tasted like diner coffee. Not the gourmet coffee you'd expect at this kind of a place.
(3)Andrea R.
My goodness this place smells good! They have the same delicious cakes, cookies and other baked goods as their older sis* AND even have a cafe for breakfast and lunch. Uh- mazing! I decided to go the "healthy" route and order 1/2 a turkey sandwich and soup because I had a feeling I'd be leaving this bakery with a mini cake in hand. My colleague ordered the same so we kept it nice and simple for them. I also took advantage of their coffee bar and ordered my 3rd coffee (the secret to being a working mom) of the day. When the turkey sandwiches and chicken noodle soup showed up at our table the sandwich was anything, but healthy. The (delicious) pretzel roll was filled with turkey, bacon, cheese, avocado and more. And it was sooo good! They also included 2 small chocolate chip cookies, which I so didn't need, but ate 1 up. Somehow I made it out of here without buying any of their baked goods, but only because I was running super late for a work call. I have to admit I felt a bit guilty about coming home from here empty handed even though my kids had no idea where I was (if they did they'd never forgive me). I heart the Deerfields closer to my house (deerfield location), but the cafe, coffee bar and drive - thru option of the Buffalo Grove location makes this one even more superior. yelp.com/biz/deerfields-…

Extremely disappointed and dissatisfied.....ordered a cake 5 days before it was needed for Passover. Just went in to pick up the cake and there was not only no record of the order, they had NO cake. I attempted to speak to several people who told me that since I was making them unhappy, they were finding it difficult to be nice to me. EXCUSE ME???? Last time I checked, it is their responsibility to make the customer happy and I know I'm being demanding...have my order ready for me!!!! Their solution was to find someone else's order to give to me and the bakery manager's response when I questioned him where the cake came from...."oh, it's someone else's order. I'll just deal with them later ". Really???? This from Deerfield bakery?? Shocking and disappointing to say the least.
(1)Linh L.
I came back here to buy butter cookies. I was planning to buy two tins worth, but the total came out to about $35! That's steep. I can spend money, but I don't think these are worth it. Deerfield is only able to keep these prices, because there's no other prestigious bakery around to compete.
(3)Jonny Q.
I had been there many times for sweets with no problem, but the first time I went for lunch was a disappointment. There were only about 5 other people there, but it took about 30 min to get my food, the other people in our party were already done. The servers gave numbers to people, but didn't seem to associate that number to the order, at least culvers has that down. The server also came out multiple times with a lunch that no one appeared to order. When I did get my lunch, the sandwich was lukewarm, about the same temperature as the coleslaw, they were good, not overwhelming, and not worth $12.00, the Fridays about 3 blocks away are quicker, and a much better value.

This place is amazing. The cake decorator Was absolutely spot on with what I wanted our twins first birthday cake to look like!!! It was a Tinkerbell and Periwinkle cake... Absolutely fascinating!!!

I'll echo Andrea's sentiments...Deerfields smells all kinds of amazing. You basically walk in and want to eat through your nose. And who wouldn't with the sugary sweet smells wafting through the air? And while the cookies, and pastries, and cakes (oh my!) looked incredible, we were there for lunch. The savory menu is a bit limited, but what I ordered was pretty delicious albeit heavier than expected - 1/2 of the daily special sandwich (turkey, avocado, and bacon on pretzel bread) and a cup of soup. I even got a cookie - no complaints there. The sandwich was flavorful and filling and just what I was looking for in a substantial lunch. I could have done without the soup - it wasn't much to write home about. Their coffee bar is full of tasty beverages - both my Rishi tea at lunch and decaf Americano afterwards were fresh and tasty. As for the location and setup, it's definitely skewed more towards a quick lunch locale than a sit and chat/get work done, but it certainly works in a pinch. You can bet next time I'm in the area I'll "wander" in here to grab a few sweet treats!

Mixed Review I had NEVER had a problem with Deerfields Bakery until the last time I picked up donuts. It was at the end of their day on a Sunday that we made it in but that shouldn't matter. Most of the donuts were already gone but they still had some available to choose from. I grabbed a cake type donut with chocolate frosting as well as a raspberry jelly donut. After we grabbed our choices we headed to the front to check out. The cashier placed my donuts in a paper bag when we asked if they had anything other than a paper bag to place the donuts in where they didn't. That's old school. The problem is that the donuts are now mixing things up inside the bag. Who knows what it's going to be when I get home? We arrived home and it appears that my concern about the donuts mixing things up was an over reaction. I first tried the cake donut. I have to say that it was a little disappointing. The cake was very dry and it kind of had an old oil taste that you shouldn't taste. The jelly donut was better and filled to the extreme with raspberry jelly and coated with sugar all over it. I purposely squeezed out some of the jelly because there was so much of it. I then used any unfilled part to scoop up the jelly off of my plate. The jelly donut brought back memories of when I was a little guy with the jelly oozing out and the sugar left on your fingers and you have to lick them clean. This was all good stuff. The only lacking part was the cake donut. I will go back again because this was my only bad experience.

Had heard a bunch of really good things about the bakery so we made a stop here recently. It did not disappoint. We had a great lunch on the patio before venturing back in for some sweets. Great selection of donuts, cakes, cookies and other really delicious baked goods. They were so good and we bought too much, but really happy we did. Overall great experience. We will be back for sure.

We ordered our wedding cake from Deerfield Bakery. The tasting was an absolute pleasure -- so much fun to try all the different combinations, and the woman who helped us (whose name escapes me, alas) was also such a delight. The cake itself was AMAZING. We went with white cake, which often can be dry, since there's no egg yolk. But it was incredibly moist - and remained delicious even after thirteen days in the fridge (Yes, I ate thirteen day old cake. I REGRET NOTHING). I've deducted one star because of a major miscommunication that could have cost all FIVE stars had our caterer not handled it. Deerfield Bakery neglected to inform us that they only make deliveries between a window of 11AM to, I think, 1PM. Thank goodness our caterer was on top of her game and reached out to Deerfield Bakery the week before the wedding to check on the delivery plans. The person she spoke with claimed that we had been told about the delivery window. This is not true. Had they done so, we would not have ordered from them, because we'd rented a venue in downtown Chicago that has no on-site refrigeration and does not even allow set-up or deliveries for weddings until 3PM, the day of the ceremony. I don't know what kind of negotiations went down between the caterer and the bakery, but the caterer said she'd resolved the issue. Indeed, Deerfield must have made an exception for us, because we had a cake at our reception. The proof, as they say, is in the buttercream frosting. (Do they say that? If not, they should. Buttercream frosting is indisputably superior to pudding, and should rightfully be the arbiter and proof of all things.) Anyway, if you're looking for a wedding cake, you can't go wrong for taste or price with this place. But if you're having an evening reception, make sure to ask Deerfield explicitly about their delivery window.

Great bakery! Good quality sweets. I ordered a cake here (elmo design) for my daughters 2nd birthday and it was a hit. The cake itself was a yellow cake, very moist and delicious. I had a layer of fresh strawberries put in, another win! The buttercream was also very tasty and the design was flawless. My daughter loved it. Just wanted to add that Deerfields also made a custom birthday cake for my son which was also awesome!
(5)Cathy B.
Thanks, Deerfields for making Mothers Day with my family wonderful. My moms has Alzheimer's but still loves her sweets. I ordered a raspberry and custard filled decorated cake and it was exquisite. Beautiful in appearance and and wonderful moist cake. She still loves the traditional bakeries of her past and it made her day. Love this bakery..

I am a very dissatisfied customer. I've been to Deerfields Bakery a handful of times and I really enjoy your sweets and coffee. I was really excited to get Sweets for an event and decided to get a head start on my day and get to the Buffalo Grove location by the time they opened. I looked at your website and saw that you open at 6:00am on Saturdays. When we arrived at the Buffalo Grove location at 6:00am, it was closed!! We had to sit in the car for over an hour in the cold weather because your website says that you are open at 6:00am and you are not. There was no point in me going home because it took 20 minutes to get here. I am very dissatisfied and disappointed. You should fix your business hours considering that while we sat in the car for an hour, you had multiple other potential customers thinking that your bakery was open at 6:00am as well.

So much better!! Review of the Wedding Cake/Custom Cake services: I am getting married at a venue that gives me the option to choose from a list of bakeries. I originally chose Central Continental because I've seen how busy Deerfield Bakery can get. After a really bad experience with Central Continental I switched our wedding cake order to Deerfields. I am so glad that I did! If you want a face-to-face cake tasting, make sure to make an appointment ahead of time because they fill up fast. I'm planning my wedding from out of town so I opted to just pick up the cake samples and call/email to discuss design. Everything was very organized. My box was waiting for me, the employee checked my name off a checklist, and even spent a few minutes to show me some cake designs. Great customer service! The sample box was AMAZING. They gave a generous sliver of all the cake flavors and plastic sauce cups filled with all their fillings. The sample box costs money (less than $20), but it was covered by my venue price. We had 4 people tasting and still had a lot of cake left. All the flavors were so good I don't know how I'm going to choose.

Bought some X-mas cookies based on previous years, the butter cookies were tasteless!!! like eating plaster. Attempted to return them the girl said I had 24 hours to return them and I said where does it say that, she replied on the bottom the receipt. I had thrown it out, and not knowing the return policy is on the bottom. Crappy! Also the selection of cookies has decreased, they used to have chocolate covered oreos amongst other varieties. For 16.95 a pound for tasteless dough ? Never again!
(1)Tanya A.
I've ordered several cakes for various occasions and they have never failed me. They are quick, efficient, and priced well. I ordered a three tier cake for my birthday and paid $180 where as other bakeries wanted double for price for the same design. They also create seasonal cakes that are made and ready for pick on. I always purchase their turkey cake for thanksgiving. The kids get a kick out of it every year.

I was actually quite disappointed with this place. I had been hearing such rave reviews of it over this years, yet, in reality, this place is not so great. While they did have a nice assortment of sweets, the actual quality of the desserts was not so great/standout-ish. It was an interesting concept of being able to put what items you want to buy on a tray to take over to the counter to purchase, yet none of the baked items were that tempting, really. The donuts looked dry, dull, and like they were slapped together with little care. And the majority of the other items were random croissants or streusels that simply had chocolate drizzled over the top... Plus they had a pretty meager selection of cupcakes. The cafe menu included some drinks that had either butter cookies or slices of tiramisu blended up with coffee! now THOSE sound good - If I ever do drop in again, I'm for sure heading straight to the coffee bar and skipping the desserts.
(2)Diana L.
I've heard a lot of great things about this bakery, and at parties, I've eaten their cakes and cupcakes, so I thought it'd be a good experience to sit and eat there. The cakes they make are beautiful and taste wonderful. I'm not particularly fond of the cupcakes though because they really lay on the frosting and color and it's too sugary for me. I think kids definitely love them because they're composed more of frosting than cake and they come in really cute designs. Be warned parents - the animal cupcakes are literally all frosting and a small cake buried beneath. Deerfields Bakery definitely has a fairy tale feel to it with the rustic building and the cute little pond with flowers everywhere. If you eat upstairs, it's even nicer with a large open window overlooking the parking lot. In previous visits, I got the reuben and the donut shake from the cafe, which tasted really good but the prices were a bit high. However, I was very satisfied with the taste of the freshly made reuben and the donut shake was thick and creamy. I definitely went on repeat visits to get these treats! My recent visit was disappointing and I found myself unable to want to buy anything. I blame this mostly on the employees. The setup and variety of goods are amazing, but the lack of service ruined it because I couldn't actually make a purchase. The employees are just disappointing. I came in and it was dead empty but no one greeted me or my friends while we browsed the selections. I saw two employees in the back but they were preoccupied with talking rather than helping us. One passed by us to grab a pastry, but didn't acknowledge us or send the other employee to help us. Worst yet, another man was in there buying lots of pastries and they completely forgot about him while he stood at the cash register waiting for someone to show up. I noticed he was getting angry and watched the employees continue talking until one noticed me and asked if I needed something. She then noticed the man and finally walked over to help him after he stood fuming. I was hoping to get a sandwich and drink, but when I asked if she could possibly make a sandwich for me (considering there was now no one else in the bakery), she simply looked at me and gave a cold no. I asked if there was any way she could blend a drink with a donut, and she gave a prompt "the cafe is closed" and walks away. I found the entire experience absolutely rude. I should warn future patrons that while they are open until 5:30, the cafe closes at 3 and EXACTLY at 3. Is it 3:15? Too bad, so sad. I don't think I'll go back anymore unless I'm ordering a cake or something for an event.

Deerfields is our go to place for any party needs. We always come here to order cake or even purchase a cake for any occasion. They have amazing array of pastries, desserts, they even serve breakfast and lunch! I love their freshly sqeezed orange juice! And their cupcakes are amazing as well!
(4)Rob W.
Angry wage slaves working the registers aside, WE. NEED. one of these in California. It was like walking into a food porn exhibit. Grabbed a GIANT strawberry glazed donut and a breakfast burrito on my way to a wedding rehearsal. The burrito I regretted immediately---it leaks like it's going out of style which is no bueno when you're wearing dress pants, driving a rental car. The donut was the opposite of the burrito. So yeah. Go nuts, kids. Just don't burrito and drive.

Ever been to a place that made you feel like an idiot? Yeah. That happened to me here. When I first walked in, I was overwhelmed with all the different counters and endless assortments of sweets that I didn't know where to begin! Breakfast pastries over here, cupcakes over there, hot drinks in the back, cakes nearby, employees rushing around, a doughnut counter, and a stairway to more seating upstairs!? I needed to buy donuts and a slice of cake for coworkers so I picked up a tiny Styrofoam tray from a pile and grabbed various donuts, piling them up on the tiny tray. It wasn't until I stopped a worker and asked for a box that I noticed flattened cardboard boxes under the doughnut bar. Ah! They should have made that more clear. I put twelve large doughnuts in the box. Then I stood by the cakes for a few moments before someone noticed I was standing there. To my disappointment, they didn't have any slices of a chocolate cake available, so I picked out a Tiramisu. Armed with my treats, I headed over to the register (why is there only one register in this large bakery!?) and asked for Chai tea latte. While they have many different coffees (and smoothies) available, there are no such things as tea lattes here. I was disappointed. I was also disappointed to find out that dozen doughnuts also do not exist here as each doughnut is priced separately. Had I known that, I would have not bought as many. There were no signs anywhere telling me how much they were. I hesitantly forked over $16 for 12 doughnuts and a cake slice before leaving in a hurry. Even as I left I still felt confused. The doughnuts were MMMMLICIOUS! I have to give them credit for that. The red velvet doughnut was amazing, as well as the strawberry flavored ones. I ate so many doughnuts that day. I really want to go back to give this place a second try, but only when I'm willing to splurge a little bit on unhealthy breakfast treats.

Deerfield's is the best. Now that we live so close, we've gone for lunch and breakfast several times. Food is usually good, if not great. Surprisingly I think my favorite thing so far has been the breakfast burritos. The treats are of course the best part - yummy donuts, cinnamon bread, cookies, cakes, etc. Half the fun is just looking at all the beautiful pastries! I also ordered a custom cake for my son's birthday party - Curious George - and it came out great, very cute, tasty, perfect. The only negative I can think of is sometimes they are out of things or their menu isn't updated so they no longer make things that are on the menu. That's sort of frustrating and the staff always seems less than impressed that you've tried to order something they don't have! So the service isn't always perfect...but overall it's still a great local place!
(5)Sarah S.
I frequent the Deerfield's Bakery in Schaumburg and am happy to report that this original location is just as amazing! My friend got some donuts & assorted breakfast pastries for us yesterday and they were just delicious! I swear Deerfield's has some of the best frosting on their donuts around. Their cake portion of the donuts is always moist and has great flavor. Yum, yum, yum!

My first time walking into Deerfield Bakery felt as if I stepped into a game of Bakery Story (iPhone Game, google it). You are overwhelmed by the stunning and tasty-looking pastries, cakes, cookies, and doughnuts gleaming over the counter. I have to admit that I forgot that I came here to meet up a friend for lunch because I was lost in admiration at each pastry. Also I even debated skipping lunch and diving into dessert, but I am glad I didn't. Deerfield Bakery offers a great breakfast and lunch menu. The breakfast is nothing out of the ordinary, consisting of breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, omelettes, french toast, and pancakes. The lunch menu offers salads, sandwiches, and soup. All the ingredients that is provided seems fresh, and the portions are great. I would say this is probably the best place to eat when you want to go for something "fresh" and "healthy," which is very difficult to find when eating out. However, I guess when you make room for a dessert pastry afterwards; this defeats the whole purpose of eating out "healthy." The lunch always leaves my stomach feeling pretty full, but I never fail to buy a pastry or two to take home. I agree that the doughnuts are a bit pricey, but the price from breakfast/lunch menus are great, and you pay less than $10 for lunch. I will note that I took one star away for the confusing set up for newcomers. I guess you get used to it but I don't understand why you make your lunch order at one stations and you have to walk 9 feet to a different counter to pay for your meal. Also I wish the staff was a bit more helpful in assisting their customers. They never fail to appear unavailable or unapproachable even when they are merely walking pass their customers. At least ask "are you doing okay?" if you see a customer standing in front of the pastry counter for awhile. Overall, I like Deerfield Bakery. It has become my favorite place to eat during my lunch break. I find myself daydreaming at work in the morning about what new item will I try at my next visit.

Someone brought our office doughnuts from here today. The donuts all looked really good. I tried 3 kinds, and all of them were good. Red velvet: amazing, and I'm not a fan of red velvet. This was better than a lot of cupcakes. Chocolate doughnut with chocolate frosting: fine. This is normally my favorite kind of doughnut, but it was boring in comparison to red velvet. Cherry: great. I think this was was so good because I wasn't expecting anything.

A perfect little afternoon pick me up. Two little treats and a smooth and creamy hot cocoa. Listened to upbeat French music while watching the sunlight stream through the cafe.

Their 'stuff' looks better than they taste. Queen Liz crown cake looked so good, I had to buy it. But it turned out the yellow cake was a little dry and nasty to cut and serve. Same with their little animal cakes. Beautiful frosting job, cute as hell to look at and great to give away but the dry cake inside was underwhelming. Their pastries and donuts look fantastic and I'd bet these will taste dead on. Will try them next time.

So, you know that first big scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? The one where the little group is introduced to the landscape of sweets - chocolate waterfalls, whipped cream mushrooms, edible flowers? If Willy Wonka were a pastry man? His Wonkaland would be Deerfields. As you walk into this huge bakery, you're instantly greeted with trays of beautifully iced seasonal cookies (this weekend they were Superbowl and Valentine's Day themed). Glass cases gleam at every turn, filled with cupcakes, petit fors, amazing cakes of every kind (from cannoli cakes and strawberry shortcakes, to traditional birthday cakes, to fun over-the-top fondant and buttercream masterpieces), bagels, danishes, croissants, italian cookies, rice krispie treats, dipped pretzels...the list goes on and on. Two big islands in the middle showcase the amazing donuts and other coffee cakes and muffins, each more tantalizing than the last. We circled the place for at least 10 minutes before deciding on what we wanted for breakfast. They even have a case of gluten free items, and some frozen things you can take and bake. They serve a more standard breakfast as well, skillets and omelettes and french toast, etc., and also have hot lunch options during that time of day. The staff is quick, efficient, and attentive. The place is clean and welcoming and huge, and there are a good amount tables situated behind the cash registers to sit and enjoy your meal or snack. If my stomach (and wallet) had endless capacity, I would have tried every single thing there. Prices are incredibly reasonable (and they often have day-old coffee cakes and muffins on the shelves beneath the islands for even cheaper), but there is just SO MUCH it's hard to know where to start. We ended up with a King Cake (which is what we travelled there for), and some donuts (my husband's strawberry donut was STUNNING, I had the red velvet, and it was good, but the cream cheese frosting was too much for me personally). I'm sure we'll be making this a regular stop before big events, and on special weekends! Too bad they don't have a golden-ticket giveaway - but if they did, I'd be the best little Charlie Bucket they'd ever seen! ;)

We always get cakes and cheesecake from here for birthday lunches at work. Gross cakes! The frosting tastes bland and horrible the cake itself isn't moist and the decorations are just decent. Honestly jewel cake is 100 times better and will save you a buck or two. Also the staff here has no personality and are really rude on the phone!

People must be visual because the visuals look great but the pastries or nothing that extraordinary if you want really good pastry try Swedish Bakery in Andersonville

Other reviews about poor customer service are spot-on. Never greeted with a smile here. Long faces....Management must be draconic. The donuts and coffee cakes are excellent. The prices are heart attack worthy. I no longer buy cakes or cheesecakes here for special occasions, as they look beautiful, but taste is lacking. My local Jewel (!) does gorgeous tortes and cheesecakes that taste better and are reasonably priced I'll run in for a Bavarian cream donut or coffeecake, but that's about all.

The food gets a solid, five star rating but its the severely lacking customer service that gets one star. I have always enjoyed the pasteries here. I have brought goodies to work and many times my bestie and I have come here on a girls fun day and indulged in a calorie, carb, sugar fest lunch that would put anyone in a diabetic coma. My dad and I have stopped by here as well for some goodies for my step mom's birthday as well. The little pastries are to die for. The red velvet doughnuts are killer, and the chocolate, peanut butter bismarks are like nothing I ever had. The filing has a great peanut butter taste but light and fluffu like whipped cream. I have gotten both apple and cherry coffee cakes for work and they were a big hit. Needless to say, I do love all the goodies they have to offer (even though my wasitline doesn't) What I have noticed is the complete crap customer service. The people being the counter look unhappy to be there and it shows in their attitude. Unfriendly, short, and almost snippy. The final straw was when my step mom and I brought back a challah purchased for the holidays. When she brought it home, it looked pretty dark (burnt) but we tried it. It was so dry it fell apart. After one piece, we left the rest unsliced, wrapped it up, and took it back the following day. The girl at the counter did everything to blame us. Saying it's dry because we must have left it out. Are you kidding me?? We asked for a manager and explained its obviously burnt and too dry. She put her hand in the middle of the challah. Not on, IN. Yup, she took it out of the bag and dug a hole in the middle to see if we were lying. Then she took a taste of it. I was speechless (anyone thst knows me, knows that quite a task). WTF just happened? Finally she refused us the money. I work in the food industry and I would never argue with someone who said they were unhappy and I would sure as hell never take a bite of their food in order to see if they had a legitimate reason to complain. I'm still in shock over it all as I write this and it was a little while ago.

We came in on a Sunday morning for our first visit after hearing a lot of good things about this place. The donuts were great, but the pecan roll and apple fritter were hard as a rock. We had to use a steak knife to cut through it, which was a big disappointment. They seemed to be a few days old and not fresh. The cashier was also very unfriendly and rude. I was planning on using this place for upcoming events and breakfast for my monthly work meetings but no longer will.
(2)D J.
always awesome and always will be best of everything doughnuts cookies sandwiches etc, all you ladies complaining about your weddings remember no one cares about your wedding or your cake this place rules
(5)Tabby N.
I ate there today for breakfast. I have been looking for a true bakery and it met all my picky expectations and more. Wish I had one closer. But I will be back next time I am in town. Wish you shipped pastries. Amazing job!

First address is correct location description wrong. It is Buffalo Grove Road and CHECKER Road. Across the street from the BG Post Office and the other side of the street from St. Mary's Parish. OK now, love Deerfields, yes, this location, no. Can't put my finger on it but I will drive the extra miles for the original. This location runs out of everything fast (which means it is good) however, they could refill if they know that this happens often (which it does). Love the coffeecakes and donuts, but the cakes really don't taste like much. The look fantastic, but lack in the taste department
(3)Steve D.
Quite the selection of baked goods here. Just about every kind you can imagine. Pastries, cakes, breads, all looking good. Check out the mini-donuts. Goods are not inexpensive, but you pay for quality. Cafe inside to enjoy a coffee with your purchase if you like. Quite a nice bustling place. Cheers to all
(4)E S.
This bakery has a lot of cute decorated sugar cookies. There is a wide variety of baked goods. The breakfast pastries are very sweet. They do a good job of decorating cakes and cookies. I am giving this place 3 stars because things look better than they taste. If I were only rating on the decoration of the baked goods, this place would get a 5 star rating.
(3)Connie C.
Old Style baked goods that are high quality. Lines in store can be long. Drive-Through is advertised as open online, but my last two trips to the the bakery it has been closed. I wish they would commit to keep it open according to advertised hours.
(4)E C.
Ordered breakfast skillet, pastry & coffee. It was not that great. I would probably go somewhere else even though their location is convenient.
(2)Elina S.
Okay so this place is VERYY convenient to my house so coming here two to three times a week is a given, especially for their coffee, which I think triumphs Starbucks & Dunkin any day. In fact, when my bestie asks me where our morning coffee run will be? She knows my go to choice will always be Deerfields. It is self serve for coffee but that is when my inner coffee barista awakens and adds the dark chocolate syrup, mix of light caffeine and high caffeine with a little bit of half/half. It's morning glory perfection if you ask me. Now onto all the things Deerfields is actually known for. Cakes are very yummy, love their use of frosting, cupcakes are also tasty but not my choice for best cupcakes around. I usually order in a cake as they can do some fancy shmancy and cute stuff, especially for kids birthdays. Now their pastries, donuts, chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, alcohol flavored cakes, I mean they do it all, and all the bad stuff for you that I try to stay away for. The long and the short of it, I love Deerfields, especially for their consistently amazing coffee, their yummy frosting cakes and their cozy morning atmosphere. I can come here, sip on my coffee, read my ipad and call it the best morning experience EVER! And they are always busy which tells you they aren't going anywhere :)
(4)Ilse Albert- l.
I live in the neighborhood and I've been going there for probably the past 10 years. It was convenient. The sweets and breads are just average . The customer service is sub par. They are not very accommodating to their customers needs. It's not a very friendly place that being said the rudeness and the unwillingness to work with their customers I will go elsewhere. Their customer service and their mediocre baking skills has me going elsewhere .

3 STARS for their exceptional baked goods...pasteries, coffee cakes, muffins, cakes. Everything is phenomenal. A little pricey, but worth it! My family has frequented this bakery for 15 years. MINUS 2 STARS for unacceptable service by 2 bakery employees and the assistant manager when I visited the bakery on Friday to pick up a prepaid order of 2 coffee cakes. Family from out of state called to place the order for 2 coffee cakes to send to another grieving family member. To avoid the $24 delivery charge (really?! $24 to deliver 2 coffee cakes 3 miles away?) I went in to pick out 2 coffee cakes to bring along after the funeral. This was already a sad day. GOING TO DEERFIELDS FOR BAKED GOODS SHOULD BE A PLEASURE, NOT AN AGGRAVATION. I went to the "pick up orders" counter to explain that I did not have a custom cake to pick up, but needed them to find the paid ticket for the 2 coffee cakes so that I would have an idea of what I was supposed to select. She suggested that I go to the front desk (counter that you pay at). The guy here immediately wanted to send me back to the "pick up orders" counter and rudely cut me off as I tried to explain. The assistant manager stepped in to let me know that the order was canceled. As I proceeded to pick out coffee cakes (kind of in a rush...needed to leave and not get the run around here!) the assistant manager approached me again and "found" the ticket upstairs. Apparently if you are supposed to come in at 3pm to pick out coffee cakes from the existing selection you shouldn't come in at 1pm. She was not apologetic for the experience and still had us pay the extra $1.30 for the 2 cakes we selected. This really should have been comped after 3 incompetent bakery staff members couldn't find the ticket with the paid order to tell me what cakes to pick out in the first place!!! Seriously, just let me pick out 2 coffee cakes at this point. Why charge me after your incompetence?! Deerfields...your service is completely unacceptable. This is definitely no longer going to be my go to bakery. Not worth the hassle!

Deerfield Bakery is a fantastic neighbor to have. They make providing breakfast for guests really easy and a reason to celebrate. Every time someone stays by us, Deerfield bakery is the default breakfast. And every time I get sent there, I'm told to only get a handful. And I always end up with two boxes of donuts and pastries for 3-5 people. I feel like a kid every time I walk into the store. A fat, annoying, eyes bulging little kid. Think Agustus Gloop. Aside from the counter of cupcakes and chocolates, the refrigerated cases of cakes, and the drawers of bagels, Deerfield has two buffet-style lines of counters with donuts & pastries, with box-bottoms below encouraging you to fill more than one. They also have a made-to-order breakfast sandwich/burrito area, a coffee station, and specialty cakes. We ordered a buttercream frosting santa cake for Christmas this year, and it tasted every bit as rich as it looked. My 3 year old nephew wouldn't stop talking about Santa's butt. No qualms giving Deerfield 5 stars, particularly because they held the cake for me for same day pickup on Dec. 23rd.

Go there at 7:30 am on Saturday July 7, 2013. They have no buttercrust bread. No sandwitch bread. No jelly bismarks. How can a bakery be out of white bread at 7:30 in the morning. I guess they do not need the sales or business. Went to the Jewel food store. Just as good and about half the cost. They lost a customer.

Went here the other day for the first time. I was really impressed by the array of baked goods and sweets! What I did not appreciate was the extremely rude cashier and terrible service. I walked in hoping to pick up a donut and coffee. I grabbed a donut and waited at the counter under a sign that included speciality drinks, iced coffee, etc. I waited a few minutes for a girl to ask if I needed help. She said I could get iced coffee at the check-out counters and they only did espresso drinks at her counter. I said ok and sorry, I was confused because it included iced coffee on the sign right above her. I walk over to the register with my donut, wait a few minutes again and ask the male cashier for an iced coffee to go. He looks at me expressionless and says "we don't have iced coffee." I asked him if he was kidding and pointed to the sign above him again very confused. He said very rudely "what did I just say?" Really? You say that to a customer? Clearly, I heard you, but excuse me for thinking this was a big joke. He continued on after I took a step back from the counter a little bit now pretty ticked off saying their espresso machine is broken so they don't have anything iced. No "sorry" or "unfortunately." Instead I get, "what did I just say." I was really taken aback and offended. I would have even taken a hot coffee if there was no iced coffee, but certainly not with his attitude. He's lucky I still bought a donut. Delicious donut, but I certainly won't be recommending this place!

I love the bakery items at the other Deerfield's, but this review is solely based on my breakfast with my hubby on Sunday. We both got the french toast and eggs special. Absolutely nothing special or memorable about it. I was shocked that a place with such great bakery could have such mediocre french toast. Anyways, this is not the closest Deerfield's to my house and since the food is not very good I think I will just stick to the Schaumburg location for bakery items.
(2)Jaime G.
Deerfield's Bakery is a great little bakery in the burbs. Full offering of sweet baked goods - from little chocolate squares to ginormous croissants. Also serve breakfast and lunch with a full line of eggs, pancakes, burritos, and sandwiches that are big portions and decent flavors. Try the breakfast burrito with chorizo.
(4)Rob W.
For starters, I bought six apple strudels from six different bakeries including this place for a blind taste contest - four from the city and two from the burbs. A dozen or so people participated. This place came in first. Excellent coffee cakes, especially cheese and chocolate chip. Creative cakes. Good bread and quality, though slightly pricey spreads. They do occasionally run out of items a little early - nice that stuff is fresh, but can be frustrating.
(4)Heather S.
What a delightful spot to get coffee, eat pastries or make your own cake --- HOWEVER you'd like it! For the past few years, I have made very special birthday cakes for very special people and the result is ALWAYS the same --- "THAT is awesome and TASTES delicious!!" The THAT is awesome is due to my creativity that the pastry chefs at Deerfields make come alive. I would HIGHLY suggest trying out cupcakes or cake for your next event. You will not be disappointed by the service, quality and happiness of your guests.
(5)Becky P.
This location knows how to do it! Great bakery products & LUNCHES (and breakfast!) Great sandwiches, they come with chips and two cookies! Yay! And if you are a lady on a mission like me, they package it in a nice to go container that keeps your chicken salad off your cookies! If I have time in the AM, I pick up sweets from here for the office crazies. Everyone goes gaga for Deerfields. NOTE - They even have doggie treats!
(5)Rysia H.
I purchased a salad thru the drive-thru and was unpleasantly surprised when I returned to work to find that is had a sticker on the front that said use by 01/09/14. To top that off, 1/2 of the salad was frozen. The egg slices had ice on them, the mushrooms were really brown, the cucumbers and lettuce were translucent and the tomatoes looked disgusting. I've contacted customer service, but don't have a response yet. YUCK!
(1)Ali R.
Every Sunday morning lately has started with a bike ride to Deerfields Bakery. It's just that good and comfy. The pastries are plentiful and delicious. But what I've been coming here for is the great coffee drinks and breakfast! And how reasonably priced! The made-on-the-spot breakfast is fresh, tasty, and simply great!
(4)Nick M.
BAGELS... my only weakness (ok, fine so are tamales, skittles, nachos, on & on... whatever), they are my kryptonite! I can eat waaay too many to tell you and in just one sitting. But like any hand made edible item, it can be flawed... but not here. Deerfields has been around forever!! Probably since the invention of bread. I guess I'm lucky because with only 3 locations (all in the suburbs), I won't get too fat on their goods. Just walking into one location and the smell alone will cause one of those awake dreams where you're bouncing from cloud to cloud trying grab at their pastries, cakes, and baked items but then you realize the clouds are made up of sweet yummy goodness too so you dive head first mouth open into... (shakes head) sorry sorry, I got lost a bit there. Staff is always nice and helpful (they may be filled with sugary goodness, I will get back to you on that one... hopefully, not from jail for biting one of them). Lucky for me a co-worker likes to stop in and grab me a bagel & baked good, plus some donuts for the others. There bagels are perfection. Like jelly to donuts, my insides are hollow until filled with these doughy rings of joy. Wait, I hear the door. He's here, HE's HERE... I gotta go!! Enjoy!

Outstanding pastries & cakes. Outstanding!

I used to enjoy coming to this bakery, but after today, I will no longer be a patron of it. As a vegetarian, I do not eat gelatin. It recently came to my attention that sometimes, some cakes will contain gelatin. I went to Deerfields and asked very politely if a few cakes that I was looking at contained it. The employee I asked did not know, and went to get her manager. The manager was very rude. It seemed almost as though my question offended her. She asked me why I cannot eat it, demanding to know whether it was an allergy. This struck me as strange and inappropriate, as, regardless of whether it's an allergy or not, the fact remains that I cannot eat it. When I told the manager that I could not eat it, she told me she could not tell me if it contained gelatin, and it wasn't her fault if I got sick because she could not make the guarantee. Okay, I thought. That was rude. Saying that it's not her fault if I got sick was a hostile response to an innocent question. I considered the possibility that they had the cakes delivered from somewhere else. I know that was the case with another bakery I went to, and that other bakery very quickly and efficiently provided a phone number I could call to verify the ingredients of the cakes. I asked if this was such a case, and if there was someone I could contact to verify whether these cakes contained that ingredient or not. Surely, SOMEONE had to know. She told me the cakes were all made on site. By her. And she did not know if she put gelatin in them. There was nobody else who would know. I asked how that was possible. Surely the baker themselves can attest to whether or not the cakes contain a certain ingredient. Either she put gelatin in, or she didn't. None of the cakes, she said, could be guaranteed to be vegetarian. It wasn't just the alarming fact that she could not verify what ingredients were in the cakes, it was the rudeness and unprofessionalism with which she addressed the situation. I walked away from the situation feeling as though she basically had told me to fuck off. I will not be back, and I want to let fellow vegetarians be aware: Deerfields Bakery does not guarantee any of their cakes are vegetarian, and cannot verify whether or not certain ingredients are or are not in their cakes.

It had been a while since I've been to Deerfield's. I forgot how fricken good it was. They have this awesome display in the middle of the bakery with all these pastries you can choose from. Grab a piece of tissue paper, and take the ones you want. I grabbed a chocolate thing, it was screaming at me to take it. I wrapped it in the tissue and waited for my friend to finish ordering from the counter. I couldn't take it anymore, my fat started to taunt me. I unwrapped the chocolate thing and stuffed my face. It was the greatest thing I have ever tasted. (Besides chipotle, of course...) In addition to the deliciousness Deerfield's has to offer, their customer service is great! The 3 employees we interacted with were all very friendly. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience.
(5)Marshall S.
If you're into hand-made baked goods, then this is a must see destination. Deerfield's has been a fixture of Chicago's suburbs for over a century. In addition to endless rows of pastries, cakes, and breads, there's a decent breakfast and lunch menu. It was a surprise to see that they serve wine and beer since I'm not sure if they're open in the afternoon or evening. If you're in the area and have a sweet tooth, definitely stop in for a treat.
(4)Bill A.
Beautiful baked goods. Café: not so much. Avocado blend rather than actual avocado--canned, frozen, processed. A bit of a disappointment for that reason. Here at a slow time but dirty dishes lying around long after patrons left. Loud music but can't adjust because office locked. First & definitely last visit!
(2)Danielle S.
I absolutely love this place. They have an amazing variety of delicious cookies, cakes, pies, mini cakes and tarts, cupcakes, doughnuts, and pastries. You can get custom cakes, or buy one pre-made. Note, if you want a custom cake they need a 2-day notice. Also, if you don't find what you want at this location, try another location. This location also has a dirve-through!
(5)Dasha B.
Deerfields Bakery is delicious, if you know what to order. My favorite is the buttercream cupcakes--they are to die for.Yum! (Sometimes the frosting is kinda frozen though :( ) I am not a fan of the set up inside. By the time you get to the register, there is a huge line and the cashiers are so slow and often don't know what they are doing. I love the fact that they have a drive-thru, but they only have a few things that you can get there from the bakery! ahh! apparently they had a bigger variety but got rid of a buncha stuff. grr!
(4)Rich G.
This place blows, their customer service is the worst I've ever encounter. Who the hell do this people think they are. They act as if I'm lucky to eat their food. I live about 2 minutes walking distance from this place and I simply refuse to go there cause their customer service is absolutely horrible.
(1)Princess D.
I used to love going here for coffee and a donut and/or breakfast and lunch. The donuts and coffee cakes are very good. I can't knock that. However, I'm not sure what happened in recent times with their cleanliness. I was here today to dine in. I had to move tables twice because of the filth that was under them. Just looking at the mess made me lose my appetite. It's too bad because this is one of the few neighborhood places in the area - not a lot of options to choose from. I agree with one other commenter about their cakes being mediocre. They are definitely pretty to look at, but they are lacking in taste and much too sweet and overpriced. Jewel and Sam's have much better tasting cakes and their prices are half of Deerfield's. Hopefully management realizes that they're going to start losing customers if they don't start cleaning the place up. I know I won't be going back anytime soon to dine in.
(2)Brittany K.
This place is my favorite place to go for weekend breakfast out. Even when I decide to make breakfast at home I still go to Deerfields to pick up a bagel and homemade chive cream cheese. When I eat there, I usually get an omelet with their fresh, homemade salsa. I love that their salsa tastes just like the kind I make at home (no mysterious jarred goo. Think actual chunks of tomato and onion...mixing perfectly with melted cheddar over egg...mmmn.) The food usually comes out very quickly - after you order they give you a number and receipt and you go pay (well, in theory. I usually wander the pastries and donuts aisles, drooling all over the sneeze guard until they give me my food and then I go pay and sit down.) If you go sit they will bring the food too you though. It gets super busy on the weekends in between 9-12. Last Sunday I couldn't even find parking right away. Avoid the after-church crowds...! So, absolutely check this place out! I have been wanting to try their lunch as well but haven't yet had the opportunity.

I ordered my husbands birthday cake in APRIL for a JULY pick up. Paid for it. THEY LOST THE ORDER! They couldn't have cared less and did not handle it well at all, I will NEVER go back!
(1)Julie U.
As usual Deerfield's came through for another big event! After 3 delicious birthday cakes this fall, we ordered personalized pastries for an upscale baby shower in a Chicago hotel that were a huge hit -- the detailed decorations (and rich taste) are forever memorable.
(5)Ruth Ann M.
Deerfields is the bee's knees. As soon as you walk in the door, you're hit in the face with the most amazing looking pastries. Prepare to use every ounce of will power to pass them by if you're just going for lunch. The lunches are fresh and tasty, and the prices are fantastic! My only dislike was for their mayo-based side salads. They taste kind of off. There are so many sandwich, soup and salad options, you will spend 10 minutes just choosing what to eat! I also noticed a fabulous breakfast menu, and some great coffee options, so I will have to come back next I'm passing through in the early hours. I also have to give them a great big pile of kudos for having eco-friendly paper goods, biodegradable serveware and glass plates, bowls and mugs. More businesses need to do this.
(4)Pete W.
Bought a apricot coffee cake and had little or no filling, flavor was bland, had more icing than filling. I won't be buying coffee cakes there again. They have been good on other products in the past, I think they are starting to cut corners to save $$$

WORST BAKERY EVER!!! I was responsible for finding a place to get the cake for my brother-in-law's wedding and I chose Deerfield's, which turned out to be a ridiculous mistake. I sent in an image of what we were looking for and received a reply that although they could not do the gold fondant in the image - they would do a gold color with a shimmer. This would have been fine if it was provided. Next, at the very last minute they told me that they could not do the flowers that were in the image but at this point it was too late to find an alternative bakery. At the event when we saw the cake we were so disappointed. It was plain yellow (almost a canary yellow) with no shimmer. Also, the cake was so dry that not a single person finished a piece. Has anyone ever been to a wedding where cake was not eaten? We also had a dessert table, which people devoured because it was tasty and from another baker. We would have definitely have preferred to take the money we spent on the terribly disappointing cake and ordered more desserts for the dessert table. Deerfield's told me that they gave me exactly what I asked for but I have email chains and pictures that state otherwise. Also, I do not think that there is anyone that would ask for a grossly dry and embarrassing cake. Please save your money and look elsewhere for your cakes.
(1)Abhijit C.
This was my first and last time eating at this bakery. I loves cakes, however this bakery needs to find a new chef coz the Black Forest cake they made was very close to the worst tasting food i have ever had. Horrible taste and texture!! Cannot believe they claim to be a good bakery but do not know how to make cakes!!
(1)Gregory B.
Is this the best bakery ever? Are the prices so low that I wouldn't want them to read this review and raise them? Is it a fun outing, a great breakfast and lunch spot? Are their turnovers just like everybody else forgot how to make 40 years ago? Are these the best damn donuts in the world? Yes. And don't get me started on their bavarian cream. Just get anything that has bavarian cream in it. Anything.
(5)T H.
Rude management at this location and horrible customer service from corporate. I tried to order a cake with a simple custom design, but the manager was very rude and difficult to deal with. She even refused to put icing flowers on the cake, even though I was paying extra for a custom design!...what kind of cake maker won't put flowers on a cake?!? It was supposed to be a special cake for my wife's 30th birthday, but it turned out to be plain and very boring. I was extremely disappointed with the whole experience. I called customer service and after waiting on hold for 10 minutes, they told me to send them an email of my issue. So I sent the email almost a week ago and haven't gotten a response at all. They are so unprofessional and rude, I will never go there again. After talking to a friend about my experience, she told me that the exact same manager was very rude to her a few years ago too, and so she hasn't gone back since. Save your money, save the headaches, and just get your cake from Costco, where they actually care about customer service.

Best ever cake donuts, bar none.

My sis welcomed me with their desserts and I was in heaven. Unfortunately trying to watch my weight I only had a few but hey if I could of ate the whole box I would.

I have been to Deerfield Bakery a number of times, and overall have been very happy. Their breads are fantastic, and what primarily draws me there. Their desserts look fantastic, but when I tasted them I wasn't as impressed with the taste as I had been with the visual. Today, I had a sandwich from there for the first time, and it was both a fantastic deal and a great sandwich.

I used to love walking to Deerfield when I was younger, grabbing a seat outside and having breakfast. They have a large selection to choose from the and the employees are always friendly. I still occasionally stop in when I am in the area.

have been here before & it has been good & I am sure if I had been buying baked goods this time I would have been happy BUT I was buying coffee & I noticed they had started serving cappucino's so ordered one which wasn't cheap( over $3 for small) I ordered with skim milk & when it came noticed there was no foam on top so told the girl. She told me it was hard to make foam with skim milk so I told her to use regular then. The cappucino came & still no foam...it wasn't good & I didn't drink it. When I left I spoke to the manager & told her . She said she would check the machine & left...didn't offer a refund or anything instead of the coffee so my advice would be to stick with Starbucks or other coffee establishment where they don't have a problem making foam with skim milk!

Went here for the first time on a Sunday around 11:30 for breakfast with my girl. I was very impressed with their selection of pastries and ooey gooey donuts. They also have a variety of other breakfast options like egg sandwiches, french toast, and pancakes. I ordered an egg sandwich (over hard egg) with ham and cheese on a croissant. It was quite delicious! My girl got a similar sandwich (scrambled eggs for her) on whole wheat which she enjoyed as well. I grabbed a sweet roll covered in what looked like chocolate chips and drizzled chocolate. Upon eating it I found it was a mint chocolate chip sweet roll. It was very tasty but I would advise them maybe labeling things a little better to distinguish between everything. The price was very reasonable which is scary because a couple of bucks will buy you lots of tasty treats that any dieter should avoid :-D Two breakfast sandwiches, a sweet roll, and a cup of coffee was only $12.60. I can say that I will definitely be going back here to try more of their menu. Two thumbs up.

I went to Deerfield Bakery for my daughters birthday cake and thought I would get something really good especially for the money it cost. and all the positive reviews on Yelp. I got a full sheet for nearly $85.00 and was told by their customer service that they had this great frosting. I ended up getting frosting that was inedible to say the least. The raspberry filling which I paid $21.00 for additional was like opening a jar of raspberry jam and spreading it on the cake. Which is a complement to the store bought jams because it was not even that good. I have paid high prices for cakes numerous times from various bakeries and have never been disappointed. The cake from Deerfield was a joke and an embarssment to the guests I had at the party. Nobody ate more than one or two spoons of their slice of cake. Nobody had anything good to say and even the kids who like frosting usually were disgusted. Do yourself a favor and by a cake from any food store or walmart/sams club before you by a cake from here, at least you'll know exactly what to expect which is still better than what you will get from here.

We have been long time customers of Deerfield Bakery. Our son is allergic to nuts, so when we ordered his birthday cake we explicitly told them to make it nut free. We were told that they do not/will not put any nuts in the cake, but they can not guarantee that the surroundings will be nut free. Extremely transparent and we liked it till we got the cake. To our horror the carrot cake was completely full of walnuts. Thankfully as we were cutting the cake we noticed it and made sure we tasted it before giving it to him otherwise a birthday celebration would have turned into a hospital visit. Definitely our last visit there.

We used Deerfield for breakfast at my business meeting this morning. The quiches were wonderful and the coffee cakes outstanding. In the past we have used local chain places, but i work for a small business, and thought, why the heck are we using big chain places instead of local? So we used Deerfield, ironically, our bill was 40% less than what it usually is with the chain places, and the attendees were very touched that we went out of our way to provide an over the top breakfast. I plan on using them as much as possible for any event that I plan. When my sister and brother in law were visiting from Michigan, they wanted a good fast authentic Chicagoland breakfast, we went to Deerfield in BG, and they were so impressed. they said "this should be on that Rachel Ray show "$40 a day"" !

This place has opened a drive thru. Great idea, only problem is you cannot alter anything on the menu. I drove up to order a breakfast sandwich and asked for a different type of cheese. They told me I need to come inside for a special order. What?! No one else in line behind me. I live walking distance from this place, so i frequent it with my family and grew up going to the Deerfield location. They were extremely rude and basically pushed me aside telling me this was their policy.don't you have to tell the cooks what the customer is ordering anyhow? A really sad day for me as i used to love this place and i have a sweet tooth being in the service industry it's my policy to give business to restaurants who provide service to their customers. Change your policy Deerfields, it's not like I am ordering a cake from your window. I'd happily pull up after paying you to wait for my order. The purpose of the drive thru is simply that, especially come winter when more people will be driving thru and will want it their way.

I used to take my daughter there after soccer practice. I know, not the most healthy. We've gone there as a family for cookies during St. Patrick's day, Valentine's day, etc. Donuts are good. Choices are fair. Not quite as good as Dunkin Donuts. Cookie and cupcake choices are second to none. I really like the ambience there. Staff is friendly. Coffee is good.

I'm the bestie from below. Although their coffee is good, I still don't think it's the best. Their cakes and pastries are pretty good, but what is amazing are their breakfast sandwiches. Less than $6 and it's huge, fresh, and delish! I highly suggest getting scrambled eggs on a croissant with cheddar and bacon!

Got donuts and sweetrolls from here yesterday and they were just okay...kind of a greasy after taste...not memorable....wheeling donuts much better

(5)So T.
Deerfields is our go to place for any party needs. We always come here to order cake or even purchase a cake for any occasion. They have amazing array of pastries, desserts, they even serve breakfast and lunch! I love their freshly sqeezed orange juice! And their cupcakes are amazing as well!

(4)Anne S.
(4)Dana R.
A perfect little afternoon pick me up. Two little treats and a smooth and creamy hot cocoa. Listened to upbeat French music while watching the sunlight stream through the cafe.
(5)Chet M.

Too bad they don't have a golden-ticket giveaway - but if they did, I'd be the best little Charlie Bucket they'd ever seen! ;)
(5)Amanda D.
(2)Susan S.
People must be visual because the visuals look great but the pastries or nothing that extraordinary if you want really good pastry try Swedish Bakery in Andersonville
(2)Linnea L.
(2)Carol Y.
(3)Kim M.
(5)Michele B.
(2)Becky P.
YUCK!
(1)Elina S.

BAGELS... my only weakness (ok, fine so are tamales, skittles, nachos, on & on... whatever), they are my kryptonite! Enjoy!

(1)Katie S.

(1)Catherine S.
Best ever cake donuts, bar none.
(5)Amy R.
(5)Justin L.
(1)Will R.
(4)Lucy E.
(4)Melissa S.
Got donuts and sweetrolls from here yesterday and they were just okay...kind of a greasy after taste...not memorable....wheeling donuts much better
(2)A V.
(5)Frank L.
(4)Stephanie D.
Beautiful pastries but, disappointing when there are big black flies and fruit flies flying around and resting on the donuts and coffee cakes etc..front and center! Maybe they should enclose these goodies to keep flies out! Gross!!
(1)Elizabeth F.
Absolutly amazing place. I'm literally addicted to this bakery! I buy their sugar cookies, coffee cakes, donuts, and brownies 5 days per week. I can't get enough of this place! I've even been late to appointments because I need my Deerfield's fix! I'm obsessed!
(5)Isabelle L.
(3)Anne Marie J.
(4)Ellie S.
Deerfield's cakes are very beautiful but, dry. Their donuts, sweet rolls, breads, etc. are very good.
(3)Rachel H.
(4)Kiera D.
I've gotten my birthday cakes here for my whole life. It's kind of tradition. But, a damn good one.
(5)Kathy F.
(4)Adele S.
(5)Jesster A.
(5)Lauren R.
My sis welcomed me with their desserts and I was in heaven. Unfortunately trying to watch my weight I only had a few but hey if I could of ate the whole box I would.
(4)William T.
(4)andrea m.
I used to love walking to Deerfield when I was younger, grabbing a seat outside and having breakfast. They have a large selection to choose from the and the employees are always friendly. I still occasionally stop in when I am in the area.
(4)jane m.
have been here before & it has been good & I am sure if I had been buying baked goods this time I would have been happy BUT I was buying coffee & I noticed they had started serving cappucino's so ordered one which wasn't cheap( over $3 for small) I ordered with skim milk & when it came noticed there was no foam on top so told the girl.

I came back here to buy butter cookies. I was planning to buy two tins worth, but the total came out to about $35! That's steep. I can spend money, but I don't think these are worth it. Deerfield is only able to keep these prices, because there's no other prestigious bakery around to compete.

When I did get my lunch, the sandwich was lukewarm, about the same temperature as the coleslaw, they were good, not overwhelming, and not worth $12.00, the Fridays about 3 blocks away are quicker, and a much better value.

love your bakery and love that I don't have to travel far to get my morning donuts as I can enjoy them all at christies in palatine. When i get out to BG location I enjoy the smoothies. Wondering if you will ever put your cakes in the palatine location? I know I would buy them. Customer service is top notch. A+
